Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide guidance to hospital administrators by calculating clinic and polyclinic costs of ear, nose and throat (ENT) department in a tertiary university hospital.

METHODS: Medical, administrative and financial records of ENT department between January 01st 2013 and December 31st 2013 were examined and evaluated upon receiving the required permissions. The universe of the study consisted of all inpatients and outpatients who took service at ENT department during the indicated year.

RESULTS: A total of 35,195 patients admitted to the polyclinic of ENT department in 2013. Of these patients, 2,243 received inpatient treatment and a total of 3,104 surgeries were performed. During this period, a total of 4,997,673 ¨ expenditure was made for ENT Department. Of the total cost, 44.83% included personnel expenses, 35.86% medications and medical supplies expenses, and the remaining 19.31% other expenses including food, cleaning, electricity water gas, and security services procurement.

CONCLUSION: The majority of the total spending made in 2013 has been in the clinic. To reduce hospital costs, health administrators must determine clinic and polyclinic costs by prioritizing cost analysis studies and identify the relationships between expenses.
