Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the topical effects of sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (mesna) on healthy nasal mucosa.

METHODS: In this study, conducted between June 2017 and November 2017, used 30 young adult Wistar albino male rats weighing between 240-350 grams. Rats were randomized into three groups, with 10 rats in each. No intervention was performed in group 1. Both nasal cavities were washed with distilled water for 14 days in group 2. Both nasal cavities were washed with 100% mesna for 14 days in group 3. All groups were sacrificed on 15th day. Biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Masson’s trichrome, Alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff and evaluated according to the histopathological scoring results.

RESULTS: There was no difference between the three groups according to histopathological scoring results.

CONCLUSION: Topical application of mesna on healthy nasal mucosa does not cause nasal mucosa damage.
