Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to reveal the general aesthetic profile of the auricle and mentum region in Turkish society.

METHODS: A total of 440 patients (172 males, 268 females; mean age 27±12.4 years; range, 18 to 65 years) who applied to the ear nose and throat clinic between February 1, 2015 and March 1, 2015 were randomly accepted in this prospective study. Auricle angulation was measured from the mastoid type region to the posterior face of the auricle by using compasses. The right and left ears of the patients were measured separately. Patients were divided into three as in the same plane, behind and in front according to the relationship of the mentum with the frontal axis of the face.

RESULTS: Of the patients, while the mentum was in midline in 388 (88%), retrognathy was observed in 22 (5%) and prognathy in 30 (7%). There was no statistical difference between the male and female genders. Patients’ right ears were measured as 17.5±4.6° and left ears as 17.4±5.4°. Bilateral surgery was performed in 24 patients (6%) (14 males, 10 females).

CONCLUSION: Otoplasty and mentoplasty operations and maxillomandibular procedures can be named among the ear nose and throat surgical procedures. The mentum, auricle, nose and face should be evaluated as a whole for the integrity of facial aesthetics.
