Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between deviation and complaints in patients with nasal septal deviation (NSD) admitted with nasal obstruction and whether NSD type affects severity of nasal obstruction.
METHODS: The study included 65 patients (45 males, 20 females; mean age 36.6 years; range 18 to 67 years) who admitted to our clinic with nasal obstruction complaint, were diagnosed as NSD, and advised surgical treatment between April 2013 and June 2013. Patients were evaluated using visual analog scale and Mladina classification.
RESULTS: Of the patients, type 2 NSD was detected in 20 (30.8%), type 3 NSD was detected in 10 (15.4%), type 4 NSD was detected in four (6.2%), type 5 NSD was detected in 20 (30.8%), type 6 NSD was detected in one (1.5%), and type 7 NSD was detected in 10 (15.4%). While no statistically significant difference was detected between deviation types and age or sex (p=0.1), a statistically significant difference was detected between NSD type and severity of nasal obstruction (p=0.000).
CONCLUSION: All parameters including NSD type should be evaluated in patients with nasal obstruction. Severity and side of nasal obstruction, and NSD type should be considered when deciding for surgery.
