Abstract

Choanal polyp is an isolated polyp which arises from any sinus and may extend into nasopharynx. Most of these polyps originate from the maxillary sinus and they are named antrochoanal polyps. Cystic polipoid masses which arise from sphenoid sinus, expand sphenoethmoid recess, and extend into choana, nasopharynx or oropharynx are named sphenochoanal polyps. In anterior rhinoscopy, sphenochoanal polyps may be confused with antrochoanal polyps. Computed tomography and nasal endoscopy have quite facilitated the differential diagnosis of these masses. Treatment options include simple polypectomy and endoscopic endonasal polypectomy. In this article, we report a 13-year-old girl who presented with complaint of left-sided nasal obstruction and headache for one year, was diagnosed as sphenochoanal polyp, and operated with endonasal endoscopic approach. No recurrence developed during patient’s 12-month follow-up.
