Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of epistaxis according to the age, month, localization and treatment management in Bogazliyan and its surrounding region.
METHODS: Of 8203 patients who were admitted to the ear, nose, and throat outpatient clinic between May 2012 and May 2013, 427 patients with an active or recurrent epistaxis were included. Patients were examined by anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy. They were divided into groups according to the age, month, localization of epistaxis and treatment management.
RESULTS: According to the age groups, 12.2% patients aged 0-10 years, 9% patients aged 10-18 years, 2.4% patients aged 18-65 years, and 4.5% patients aged above 65 years had epistaxis. Fifty-six patients (13%) presented with active epistaxis, while 371 (87%) had recurrent epistaxis. The incidence was highest in dry, cold and hot weather. All patients were managed by conservative methods.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of epistaxis among patients is 5.2% in Bogazliyan and its surrounding region. Conservative methods are effective in the treatment of epistaxis.
