Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate systemic diseases that are frequently seen in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).
METHODS: Medical files of a total of 142 patients (110 males, 32 females; mean age: 49.2±10.5 years; range, 25 to 77 years) who had polysomnography (PSG) due to complaints such as snoring, witnessed apnea, and excessive daytime sleepiness and were diagnosed with OSAS at the sleep laboratory between January 2017 and January 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Medical history of the patients, medications used, and laboratory tests were examined.
RESULTS: According to the PSG results, mild OSAS was found in 22 (15.5%), moderate OSAS in 25 (17.6%), and severe OSAS in 95 (66.9%) patients. At least one systemic disease was observed in nine (40.9%) of patients with mild OSAS, 18 (72%) of patients with moderate OSAS, and 51 (53.7%) of patients with severe OSAS. The most frequent systemic diseases in these patients were hypertension in 28.2%, diabetes mellitus in 20.4%, and depression in 15.5%.
CONCLUSION: Our study results show that OSAS is a serious disease with high comorbidity, and it is an appropriate approach to evaluate these patients in a multidisciplinary manner.
