Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate patients with a diagnosis of peripheral vertigo in terms of psychosocial factors.
METHODS: Forty-five patients (27 males, 18 females; mean age 45.53 years; range, 23-70 years) who admitted to our clinic with a complaint of dizziness between April 2018 and June 2018 and were diagnosed as peripheral vertigo were included in the study. Results were evaluated by using self-confidence, perceived stress, state-trait anxiety, and coping with stress scales.
RESULTS: The economic level of the majority of the patients was moderate or below moderate. In terms of age variable, the level of seeking social support was higher in patients over 45 years of age. Married participants' social support seeking dimension scores were higher than single participants. The anxiety and stress levels of vertigo patients decreased as self-confidence increased. As coping with stress skills increased, anxiety levels decreased.
CONCLUSION: This study showed a significant relationship between self-confidence, stress and anxiety levels and coping with stress skills in peripheral vertigo patients. We propose to give social and psychological support to these patients in terms of self-confidence, anxiety and coping with stress as part of their treatment plan.
